Over the past few months, as I have become increasingly vocal on political and environmental issues I discovered something about my self; apparently I am a lefty. I never set out to be a “lefty”, nor did I try to not be one. Do I think I am a lefty, well perhaps…the question I have for my accusers is, what’s a lefty, and why would it bother me to be one?
I understand the concepts of left and right, but how far left do I have to be, to be a lefty? If I lived in the states, and supported the liberals I would defiantly be a lefty.
In Canada if you support the liberals, well you’re a Canadian. Are Canadian leftists far more left than our southern neighbors? For me to consider some one a leftist, they need to be a member of the NDP, or a straight out socialist. If these people resided south of the border they would probably be considered radicals, or under the patriot act terrorists.
Straight up, I am mainly ‘left’ in my thinking and I don’t care. This is what I am, it would be like calling me white, or 20 something, or a student. I love how the most common retort to a leftist idea boils down to “what ever lefty”. I stopped throwing sand in the sand box when I was 5, but that’s beside the point. For the record here is brief list of what I support, and believe in;
- Universal and accessible health care
- Mass transit
- Emission control regulations
- Gay marriage and gay divorce
- Renewable energy
- Public health and immunization
- Legalization of marijuana
- Public housing
- Development and maintenance of the military
- Ad-free schools
- Canadian sovereignty
The list goes on, I would also add something about abortion, but I don’t have a uterus so I really don’t think it is my place to comment. With that said, I now digress.
Bill, it turns out I swallowed the red pill, or maybe it was orange.

Some folk who think they're left are actually libertarian. Maybe you.

Hmm,
An army medic/nurse that supports the core values of the healthcare system and the military... How radical!
The only thing that puts you left of centre compared to your peers (for example, me) is that you care enough about the environment to let reform inconvience you.
Bring on the renewable sources of energy, the Kyoto Accord and solar powered flashlight, as long as tearing around in my rice burner doesn't cost me one extra penny cuz of you... ya damned lefty!

hmm,
a moron/baffoon who is clearly well ahead of himself and his steady spewing of all too paltry assuming assertions. Don't trip!
