The rain had stopped but the streets were still wet. A continuous stream of dirty mist washes up from my tire and covers my face. The ride home is short, but I can’t help but wonder how I will spend this evening in a house alone. I used to love getting of work early, now I savor every moment in the store, and dread closing time. Once the store is closed my life feels closed, I have a sense of emptiness wash over me, and my thoughts turn blank. What am I going to do until tomorrow? My computer, movies, and books can only keep a person occupied so long, I need social contact.
This sounds slightly pathetic, but pathetic or not it’s my life. I spend too much time worrying and not enough time doing. So I have decided to through caution to the wind and capitalize on every moment, carpe diem.
“4 hours” he says, “it will only cost you 15 bucks……….your getting the companion fee”
“Its only 4 hours? I can handle that” I reply
“that’s one way, then another 4 back”
“why are we going to Dryden again?”
The plan is that just before 0900hr on the morning of Wednesday May 25, Daniel T Wallace will call for a cab to the greyhound bus depot. Before the cab arrives at his residence a call will be placed to my number, ensuring that I am awake and prepared to begin the journey
“We are picking up my sister, she is to sick to drive so we are meeting her half way”
“Too sick to drive?” I cant help but wonder.
“Ya, she called my mom and said she couldn’t make it all the way from Winnipeg….ridiculous isn’t it”
At 0915 the cab will arrive at my door. I will enter the cab and travel with Mr Wallace to our destination. The Bus Leaves at 0945, sometime between arriving at the depot and departing for Dryden I will call work…..and tell them I am sick.
“So do you want to do this? For real? “ He asks, with a slight glimmer of hope in his eye.
“I don’t see why not, I have nothing else to do, in fact my summer should be full of ridiculous things like this”
“good, I’ll call you in the morning” he sighs
The next 8 hours will be an experience; however is this truly the definition of carpe diem I am seeking?
Latter the phone rings
“Bring a book”
“ok”
Good thing Mr. Wallace reminded me, 8 hours spent shoulder to shoulder could be very uncomfortable, especially after the first half hour when we run out of things to talk about. It is only 15 dollars, Caveat emptor.
