I have learned that a family is what they say it is, in that anyone can be considered a member of your family. Your aunt Heather for example, who is your mothers best friend from college, or Mrs. Francis down the street who acts like your grand mother. Families are not just biologically related, their roots like a giant sequoia stretch far deeper that. So if as a society we can accept that these people are our family, while not truly related by blood, why does accepting to people of the same sex as a family cause such a disturbance.
I consider my self to be rather open-mined, and accepting to alternative lifestyles. After all, I don’t want others poking their noses into my business, why should I get involved in theirs. I am an adult, and I can understand that not everyone shares this train of thought with me, and this is fine. We are a world of individuals, and as Idyllic as a world with out bigots, and haters would be I truly don’t think it would be that same world.
With that said, I believe everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion, but to change laws in a manner that will affect something as fundamental as a family is outrageous. A family is who they say they are, unless they are of the same sex, and then they are not a family. How does this benefit the populous?
By no means do I consider my self to be an expert on US politics and policy, but my basic understanding of the constitution is that exists to protect rights and freedoms, not to take them away. Amendments made to the constitution in the past were made to include, not exclude. This is as outrageous as amending the constitution to state that Americans no longer have the right to bear arms. This of a fundamental aspect of their lives that for what ever reason they cherish so much. So if you cannot pry a 9mm out of a dead Americans hands, why does it seam so easy to narrow their definition of family. Are instruments of death more important to the self-proclaimed ‘greatest nation on earth’, than their own families?
Perhaps I am going on a tangent, however I feel my point has been made. A family is who they say it is, and this definition will remain true despite laws and amendments. I just can’t get over how one would try and use a document that provides for rights and freedoms of a nation, to take rights and freedoms away.
I dont think it is possible for anyone to be free under law. Of course without law, one would not necessarily have to potential to be free. no ne in america has any freedom. ultimately they could all go to jail if the right person saw it fit. Of course we are not much better, although i think we do have a better understanding of freedoms, although not the history to document it. the gay marriage issue, should not be an issue at all.
