Becoming immobile has changed my way of thought and altered my outlook on life. As stressful as the situation was that is causing me this temporary loss of mobility, I have noted a reduction in my overall stress. Previously I was torn between school, the out doors, work and my social life. My accident has resulted in the stripping away of my worries. No my focus remains on activities that can be accomplished with in my home, I can not attend work, the out doors is out of question, and my social life now revolves around what I have come to know as the ‘internet’
So like anyone else would in my situation my gaze was drawn towards my studies. Like a model student every moment was spent pouring over pages of books. My fingers became stained with ink, every were I went a pen was tucked behind one ear. The air in my room took on a smell of scholarly learning, like in great libraries and lecture halls, pungent with the sent of old paper and eraser. Loose paper, manuscripts, and printed articles from medical journals littered my floor, my desk was unusable due to the stacks of books, and my bedside table was a receptacle for computer disks and coffee cups.
This intense session lasted all of 12 hours, and then I gave in. Drawn into the only thing I could do that is completely unproductive. I was seduced by the beautiful siren that is online gaming. Her call beckoned me from my room, and like ship full of unknowing sailors I crashed my self on her rocky shores, never to be seen again. The two seductive sirens that are my online gaming world are Wolfenstine, return to enemy territory, and Empires, dawn of the modern world. Two very different games, yet both with strong overtones of war and world domination.
Wolfenstine is a free download; the game is first person and played in timed 30min games. Dan turned me on to this, and it continues to be a barrier to productive schoolwork for everyone who dares download it. In the game you are given the option of choosing being the axis or allies, (Americans or nazis and yes I am aware of the way this looks). You then choose your weapon of death, and the killing begins. The game is very addictive, and easy to play, I find it a good stress reliever.
Empires cost me 40 bucks; you’re like god, looking down on the world and causing death and destruction. The makers of the game don’t use the god comparison, for what ever reason, But akin it more to being a general. You have to build a civilization, and mine resource, harvest lumber and grow food; all while amassing military might for you one triumphant blitzkrieg that will ravage your enemy. I enjoy building my empire, but the game is slow at times, and very time consuming. Last night I played a multi player online campaign and had to concede after 2 hours, even though I was the dominant force, I simply didn’t have the endurance. Empires give you several options of play. You can play several campaigns, you can scrimmage against on or more computer players, or you can take your skills to the next level and throw down online.
Although both games are truly different genera’s of video games, I would not consider this a case of comparing apples to oranges, it’s more like granny smith to Macintosh. Wolfenstine is 40 dollars cheaper, but empires takes up less space. Empires provides multiple game play options, while Wolfenstine offers only one. The pros and cons of these games are undoubtedly being argued as we speak in online chat rooms across the Internet in hundreds of languages. Ultimately my favorite remains Wolfenstine, return to enemy territory. The game is just more gratifying, and simple. And even though the destruction of entire cities and civilizations is far more chaotic, the one on one action provide by Wolfenstine is an immediate source of gratification.
